Pinwheel Way back in the Day...

Bob has inspired me to remember...

Bananas...the way they used to taste!!! OH MAN!! YUM!!

I got to thinking, (dangerous, I know), about how the corn flakes used to be bigger & stayed crunchier in the milk longer.
And how butter cookies eaten off my fingers like a ring as a child, tasted so much more rich & butter-ier than anything you can buy today.

What are some of the things that you remember tasted better as a kid?

My Daddy used to be stationed at El Toro Marine Base in California (lifer Marine), and Mom would take us kids to Newport Beach. There on the beach they sold what I believe now to be smoked salmon and frozen chocolate covered bananas on a stick. That was our meal when we went there and I haven't tasted smoked salmon like that or the chocolate bananas that good since. (I know that sounds hokey since this is the BANANA site - but that's the first thing that popped into my head).

I remember bakery trucks that use to make the rounds . The panel trucks with the deep shelfs full of fresh baked bread and pastries.

No chemicals? It was unregulated open season to use chemicals in agriculture! DDT was introduced in the 1940's.

Besides the Helms bakery truck, I remember a Date shake was 35 cents at Dairy Queen on Redlands Blvd.

Ahhh... Date Shakes! MMmmmmmm!!!
I remember my grandparents used to take me out to the Dinosaurs by Palm Springs when I was a kid to get the amazingly good famous Date Shake from Hadley Orchards. Those were the days. Thank goodness the shake survived, and you can still get it there.

Well, as I read all this I can consider myself lucky living here in not so "developed" country. Thrue that as time is passing by more and more things are loosing "real" touch but we here still can frash "smell" meet, homemade cheese, drinks, turkish coffe and all buch of things. I talked with many ppls from all ower the globe this summer and they all found that awesome. We still dont have hard EU regulations and production rules and we still "breath free" with domestic food.

There used to be one in Brea not too far from where I lived. It was a favorite hang out spot for us locals. Of course there also used to be lots of orange groves and strawberry fields there too.

I think there were so many chemicals & preservatives in food back then, that's what made them taste so good. We still have a ways to go as far as all the packaged meals. Real cheese - in mac & cheese, tastes so much better than powdered cheese!
I used to love cotton candy but hate it now. I LOVED (& still do) theater popcorn with extra butter & grape drink. What they use for 'butter' is a real artery clogger though.
Did you know that in 60's (& I think 50's) we could not buy butter here? We (my parents) had to go to Ill to buy butter. We could only buy margarine (oh yum, all that hydrogenated oil!) because we were the dairy state. I know, it doesn't make sense!
In my late teens, everything tasted better if you smoked a little marijuana LOL. I've been allergic to it since
Oh yeah...Marc's Big Boy hamburgers! (in CA it was "Bob's" Big Boy) a real treat if we could afford it! Was a great teen hangout. They don't exist anymore.

Greg, I went to that Bob's Big Boy a couple years ago. Blasphemy! They kept the name, and they still serve hamburgers, but they have a Buffet there, and serve Chinese food?!?!? What's up with that???!!

I'm so fortunate to have 2 of my old favorites still within easy driving distance. 1) Bob's Big Boy in Glendale (which still serves the Big Boy Combo the way they used to). 2) Sambo's in Santa Barbara.

I made it a point to drive to eat at the peripheral Big Boys around SoCal, and None of them tasted the same. I went to the ones in Baker, Torrance, Yucaipa, and Victorville. Nada. In fact, I was sitting there eating the burger thinking how a Big Mac would be better tasting than that. AND - the malted shakes are not the same either

While Sambo's menu is pretty different than it used to be, the food there is actually a notch up from what it used to be, which is nice. So, if you're solely going to enjoy it just for being within the 'name' of the restaurant, I guess that's okay, but even the pancakes are different (better, yes), but if you were expecting the stick-to-your-ribs truck stop style pancakes, they have gone with the graces of the chain.

Yep! I remember that. There used to be one in Anaheim/Fullerton area too right off of Lemon, which you can still see the drive-in part of the restaurant, because the turned it into a Sonic. Completely not the same. No great Root Beer Floats, no amazing chili cheesy fries, and no hot dogs that taste like there's actually beef (or any other meat) in there.

However, there's an old one still in La Habra and Norwalk, and I think they are still owned by the original franchise from the 70's, if that makes a difference.
