Here's my 2008 (and planned 2009) thanksgiving turkey!

Brined for 24 hours, swathed in cheesecloth and basted with wine/butter broth every half hour in a 350 degree oven for about 4 hours.

Comes out of the oven looking like a scorched mess!

Peel off the burnt cheesecloth, and voila! Golden, succulent goodness.

Gobble, gobble.

It's a shame....Holiday skipping.
I always thought it was pretty simple. One holidays decorations don't start till after the other ended.
Thanksgiving starts Nov 1
Christmas stuff should not start till the 27th at the earliest

My thoughts anyways

Here a lot of stores did not even have Halloween decorations
HD had their Christmas decorations out in Sept
After Halloween my THanksgiving decorations go in the front window
I have started putting candles in the windows & snowflakes
Tomorrow I may start on yard decorations
I need to start early to get everything up by Dec 1st
I usually wait & turn the lights on Dec 1st
One year I turned some on a few days after Thanksgiving

Yeah! Black Friday & Cyber Monday, LOL! With all the economic problems, guess they decided 2 days were better than one! As for the 12 days of Christmas, I think it works like some restaurants & cafes. They just shutdown to keep labor & utility costs from bein larger than profits cause eveyone's already spent all their money during the rush. Anyway, that's what a shop owner here said.
That's why I think it's a good idea never to let holidays become dependent on stores. I mean, people can still sing & give presents till the Epiphany, stores or no stores .

To be honest, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite (if not my favorite) holiday. This is because it hasn't forgotten its meaning and become commercialized crap like every other holiday has. Think about it....Christmas isn't about lights, decorations, trees, cheesy songs or presents.....it's about being generous and being kind/loving those around you. In this day and age, Christmas just means 'getting presents' to most people (especially kids) which they come to EXPECT and this just isn't right to me. Not to mention the excessive power wasting that occurs the month or so prior to Christmas (and the death of millions of healthy trees). Call me a scrooge if you want, but these superficial things are NOT what Christmas was meant to be. I could go off on most of the other holidays too....just picked Christmas to rant on cause it is so easy to tear apart.

However, Thanksgiving is one holiday that tends not to have too many decorations (decorations=superficial commercialized CRAP that distracts from the true meaning of a holiday). It was always about getting together with friends and family, being thankful for everything you have and enjoying spending time together to eat a wonderful meal. These things are still the heart of the holiday and I don't know that this will change. So in the end, Thanksgiving is a genuine holiday that still abides by its original founding morals. Just remember, just cause you don't see decorations in stores or homes doesn't mean the holiday has been forgotten....it just means it hasn't gone to s*%t like most other holidays have.

Good points, Bryan. I have seen quite a few LED Christmas lights on commercials recently, which is good (saying they use 70-90% less energy). Also, a pretty hefty amount of people use fake trees now because it is much easier, cheaper, and cleaner (and allergen free).

On the other hand, we still use regular lights, for lack of better terms, and a real tree. Something about the LED lights makes them seem harsher on the eyes, it's sort of nauseating after a while. We still use a real tree because it supports our church and the smell is great. Hard to beat the real deal on something like that.

A funnier note is that there won't be any collards on the table this Thanksgiving! They haven't had a frost, so they'll be too bitter. Always feels good when the meaning of the holiday is still remembered and it's a plus when most of the food that you eat for it is home grown.

Great thread! We always have an artificial tree so we never get that great pine forest smell. I'll bet that really adds a lot (especially since I love camping in pine forests)! But a guy waits a whole year just to get presents and they're not always what he wanted anyway. Sometimes, a present I get in the summer is better than anything I get on Christmas.
But there's lights, decorations, great food, and people to have fun with ! And that's till January 6th! We always celebrate all 12 days of Christmas with relatives and friends! It's just being together and being happy that make it so great!
I've been studying American history. The pioneers made their own toys and presents and everything else. They didn't need stores to celebrate holidays!

Thanksgiving is about cooler temps (it's going to be 40F for a low) Hunting (I won't be). My (in)outlaws are bringing their expando camper & parkin' upside the party barge.. So nobody is drivin' no keys to worry about :^) maybe a couple outlaw neighbors will stumble over to the compound.. for Food, Friends, Family and Football.. & watchin' the Lions get spanked, and possibly the cowgirls too... lmao :^) Now that's something to be thankful for (sorry cowgirl fans).

Nice, guys ! But back on topic (tuff move!).
My fave Thanksgiving decos are the pilgrim hats & the cornucopia! The cornucopia can be made by anyone who can weave a basket. It's a symbol of food & abundance that dates back to the 5th centruy BC. It's also called the Horn of Amalthea (a moon of Jupiter) and the Harvest cone. By tradition, the horn-shaped wicker basket is filled with fruits and vegies.
There are 2 cornucopias on the Idaho flag & state seal. There's one on the state seals of North Carolina & New Jersey (Hi Bob!). It's also on the coat of arms of Columbia, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, and the state of Victoria, Australia.
Cornucopia is also the name of an annual November wine & food celebration in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.
This is a pic of an old poster with one on it:
