I tried all that in Santa Barbara. For me trapping was very easy but the are rodents and screw like hell. Solution, move to Hawaii. We don't have gophers. No I just need to deal with the mongoose.

You will love Hawaii over Chicago. I moved to the Big Island last year. You can grow almost anything. Be careful of Banana Bunchy Top Virus. Look it up. It's nasty!!

Thanks for the replies. I will look into the worm castings. Caliboy, they are all potted waiting for our house to be built (25 gallon pots). They are all doing this. The whiteflies are not excessive....

I battled gophers daily when I lived in Santa Barbara. It looks like rot and not a vermin. You have nothing to lose to try what Dan is suggesting. I have seen some amazing come backs from bananas....

I was never able to identify the seeds on other flowers from the bird. The large bird has bigger seeds.
