Re: Bee colony collapse disorder

CCD is a myth. Incompetent beekeepers and an incompetent agricultural industry kills colonies. But who wants to say they're incompetent? Blame it on something else, some mystery something. Kinda like...

Re: Bee colony collapse disorder

More rubbish being used to create false job security. Nothing new being seen here. Just the usual predators and pests that the bees have been dealing with for eons. CCD is a myth used to explain...

Re: Which Dwarf banana would best for container

Any of the dwarfs are going to get around 9' tall (plus foliage) - taller if they don't have copious amounts of sunlight year round - by the time they're ready to fruit, if they ever mature enough to...

Re: mycorrhizae and mulch relationship?

Endomycorrhizal fungi is important for most plants and critical for a few. Others depend on Ectomycorrhizal fungi that form sheaths on the outside of the roots but those are mostly relegated to the...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

A 16' trailer would work too so you don't have to cut your taller nanners back as much. Let it hang over some and you can keep 20' nanners even. If you have room in the garage, of course. Knowing...

Re: Question

This is trivial to do organically without micromanaging, with the judicious use of compost - which is very friendly to the soil foodweb too. Nature brings in a lot as well, especially if you have an...

Re: Question

I have to admit, my bananas have tolerated a fair amount of neglect in the pit greenhouse over time - and survived very well. Here's a blog describing the current state of affairs down in the...

Re: Last California Gold of the year!!!

From my understanding, perhaps from growers here, it turns to mush just like a regular Dwarf Cavendish.

And do some background checking on Ty Ty - they had a Daves Garden Watchdog entry that was...

Re: Last California Gold of the year!!!

The link comes up as a canceled item. Tho, it's probably already sold by now if it was a wrong link. I still plan on getting one of those for my collection here before long.

Be well,
Mike

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

Marry me?

Wait... I'm already married. Sigh...

Well, my BIL collects anything Budweiser and has a room dedicated to his collection, and others around here collect rusty old junk cars that sit on...

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

Before you listen to them that say you can't get fruit from nanners in Zone 7, give this thread a gander:
http://www.bananas.org/showthread.php?t=310

You indeed can get nanners without a greenhouse....

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

What kind of cherries are you growing in Zone 9? I've been looking for a cherry to plant here in Zone 8 Texas.

Be well,
Mike

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

Banana roots are disposable - don't worry. They shoot out roots that last for a while and then are discarded for fresh roots. Their strength lays in their corm - so long as that's intact, what...

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

It won't grow much over the winter, however it would be good to pot it up into a 1-gallon pot similar to that black pot you have there in the picture if for nothing more than to provide more soil...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

You'll know when your nanner flowers. You won't see any more sign of the flag leaf coming that you see from regular leaves, and the flower either - if there's any change it's very imperceptible....

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Cutting the stem shorter won't harm that stem so long as it's cut above the originating point of the leaves and it's not about to flower - it'll continue growing from where you cut it. A couple or...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Below 55F or so, nanners stop growing altogether so that would work if you can maintain that cool temperature or thereabouts. It gets warm in the winter here in Texas, so I have to resort to...

How tall is that thing? Mine are a couple of years old and I'm eagerly awaiting a bloom. Gonna put a chair out there and sit and stare at them. :2721:

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

Is this a known problem with Rajapuri, or did you just have bad luck with it? I have a large one that I hope to fruit this season and a younger one just put in the ground that's growing happily.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

I potted up my Dwarf and regular Orinoco, Saba and Dwarf Brazilian, and planted out a young Rajapuri. I have a few more that I'll plant out before long once I finish my taro beds - banana beds will...

Re: Greenhouse

Yes, I use 6mil plastic. It's fairly sturdy but not unmanageable. I would invest in some actual greenhouse poly, even tho it's more expensive - that stuff will give you around 4 years of service. The...

LOL! Where's the beef nanner tho? Or chicken nanners? Hey, everything tastes like chicken anyway, right? :)
