Re: I like bananas
Just so you know, dwarf cavendish can get to 6+ feet tall of pseudostem (not counting height of leaves). Super dwarf cavendish might be a better candidate for indoors as it will only get 3-4' of...

Re: A question about horseradish
From what I've heard you can harvest roots in any month that ends in 'R.' I've never heard anything about worrying about leaves dying back or anything like that. Just dig up the root, cut off any...

Re: Removing Pups
Personally, I would not remove any pups at this late in the game. Basically you are removing roots and leaving a wound on the plant's corm that won't have much time to heal. This opens up the...

Re: New house an need a idea
Suggestion: automatic guns on motion-activated turrets that will point at them, but not fire. I think they'll get the hint very quickly LOL.
Otherwise, maybe plant some arborvitae or some other...

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
I have only had small ones bloom thus far. Last one was A. bulbifer, the bloom was about 8" tall and yes, it smelled terrible (but they only stink for a few days). I liken it to rotten garlic or...

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Here's an update: Just over 48" tall now, spadix is much darker, less shiny and has developed much more texture. The flower itself is over half of that height, too (it's like 30 inches itself). ...

Re: My First SDC Pups
Definitely do not transplant them off any time soon or they will likely not have enough roots to survive. Congrats on the pups, though.

Re: Not sure what's going on here...
They do that before blooming.....just watch and enjoy! My SDC is pretty problematic in the winter, but as long as it's still putting up leaves, I'd hope for a bloom!

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Amorphophallus can rot if left in soil with too much moisture. I remove all soil from mine and let them sit/dry out all winter while they are dormant. I'm not sure what the potential for rotting is...

Re: Banana life span
It will continue to grow until blooming. From my experience with SDC, if conditions aren't quite right, sometimes the main plant stops growing/dies and pups replace it. The entire system (pups,...

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Yeah, Steve....konjac are one of the easiest to get a hold of and is pretty simple to grow. And it's proliferative. Bulbifer is another one that's easy to grow/propegate. The warts that grow on...

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
I don't really do anything with the soil. Iowa has nice black soil. I fertilize once a month or so with Osmocote slow-release pellets. I'm thinking of getting some compost to mix in this year,...

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
I plant all my amorphs, colocasia, alocasia, bananas, etc etc outside during the summer. I've never had any issues with soil pathogens. Amorphs get dug up in the fall just after first frost, then...

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Those titanum seedlings are actually quite big. My baby bulbifer from last year was about 2" tall and an inch across. SOOOOOO tiny! I'm probably going to try to get a hold of A. paeoniifolius this...
