I agree with Sunfish. Damping off is the term used for seedlings that are kept too moist and suffer death at the hands of a fungus.
Once sprouted be sure to keep the top of the soil dryer than you...

Looks good so far Randy. You should be able to keep humidity up in there as well to try and germinate some "open air" containers. I have found that Zone 5 Indiana is not as germination friendly to...

I thought that Venticosum was a non pupping variety....or possibly I'm confused? Either way, Anything green and growing in Zone 5 January's is welcome! LOL.

I noticed that one of my Ensete Ventricosum seedlings died back and then last week I noticed this little guy sticking out of the soil like a pup.
I don't know if it's a "pup" or if it chocked way...

I had a Superbum do the exact same thing to me when I lived in zone 9 - Sacramento, CA. See the picture below of how well it grew from seed in less than 9...
