Re: container banana Mexicali

I've had problems with leaves frying during 110F heat wave(normally high 90's here). M.balbisiana was unfazed, as was Musa Ornata, but the Himalayan types hated it. Also clay pots tend to heat up,...

Re: Ensete Ventricosum Flower

That's a really huge one for the pot, good job. Do you remember where you bought the seeds? The seeds I've grown from bananatree.com have had red p-stems, and I wouldn't mind growing some with green...

Re: Dwarf musa to classify.

Looks like an ornamental, my guess is a Musa ornata type because of the upright leaves, and hue.

Re: Musa Sikkimensis mature height

For me on the chilly northern California coast sikkimensis(agri-starts clone) started growing in spring before M.basjoo, but I never saw it's ultimate height. It would probably get taller with a...

Re: Tropicalizing in Zone 8b/9a

Nice yard! Musella lasiocarpa is hardy in your zone, it's a odd dwarf banana with a really nice flower.

Re: Plants that complement bananas...

Gingers look good. My favorite compainion plant for potted Musa is succulents, they have a really shollow root base so they don't choke the banana for water/space.

Re: divide potted bamboo?

If the shoots are still small I'd go for it and they'll just abort to save energy. Do you know what genus/species it is?

Re: divide potted bamboo?

It's a good time of year to divide most bamboos before they shoot. If it's super dense/woody you might want to try a hand saw, sawzall, or chainsaw(if no rocks). Good luck with it.

I've heard that the Puerto Rican variety has good cold tolerance, and hopefully soon there will be some of those highland african types available.

Re: "geothermal" greenhouses

Sunfish, that's a good take on the system with the solar, with the pea gravel. The only thing that seems like it would make it better is more of a underground pattern. Maybe inground water pipes with...

Wink Re: comparisons of heat mat costs and performance

back to the infloor heating idea. The in floor heating is usually set up after the rebar is tied, just before the cement slab is poured. Which is then tiled over using thinset. I've seen it hooked...

Re: Plant Delight Nursery ?

Their travel stories are a good read. They frequently mention seeing wild bananas on their plant/seed collecting trips, too bad they haven't introduced more zone 7 Musa.

Re: Cold hardy Container Bananas??

The banana will probably be a zone or two less hardy in a pot than in the ground.

Re: Nanners in India & Nepal?

Did you guys happen to get a look at the one JD anderson is selling as Musa 'Rust'. Sounds like an interesting ornamental, but the $200 minimum has kept me away.

Re: Are ALL these cold hardy?

Ensete glaucum shouldn't be on any cold hardy list, but in the future there could be a cold hardy one collected from colder places/elevations. E.ventricosum is alot cold hardier, and tolerates cold...
