Re: dead, or what

Resprouting from the middle. Again, thanks for helping me get this thing going!

Now I'm starting to wonder about some purple sugarcane I've got going. I presprouted it in damp paper, but when I put...

Re: dead, or what

Well I had some help, of course. I have never mail ordered corms before, but now I feel a lot more confident.

I just finished potting it up and watered it in.
THEN it occurred to me that perhaps I...

Re: dead, or what

I put the dead-looking corm into PFS early Feb. Warm as I could get, lots of sun.
Checked it a few weeks later: nothing.
Kind of gave up on it.
But I always wait to really give up.
Just pulled it...

Re: dead, or what

I do have pool filter sand. Doesn't seem 'coarse' to me, but I will give it a try.

Re: dead, or what

Yes, it's still heavy.
I don't have a greenhouse. What can I do to simulate this?
It's in my warmest and brightest room, but not getting direct sun at the moment. Decent humidity.
Daytime is about...

dead, or what

I got this black banana late 2014 - it was dug off a mat and as you may be able to see below, it was kind of a slice of the corm. But it was big, so I thought it would be OK. Didn't have many roots...

Re: Procrastination

I separate pups whenever I get to it, and I don't recall any late season issues.
I think it's a good idea to let the cut portion of the corm dry to reduce the issue of rot at that point.

kumquat

I want to get a kumquat tree.
A grafted tree will bear fruit faster, right?
One vendor I am looking at sells a 4" pot grafted plant and says it bears the 2nd year.
Also looking at a place that sells...

thai banana, fresh

Not really a recipe, but I was wondering when to eat a fresh banana labeled 'thai'. It looks like a manzano (short, squat). Do you need to let it go to black, or what?

I have googled it but not...

Re: 20 or so new houseplants.

Mine too.
If I can, I try to do it in phases. Which is also less shocking when the spouse comes home to find only part of a jungle has appeared in one day.

grow light configuration

I am goint to try using T5HO bulbs for the first time.
However, I am pretty clueless as to what distance from the plants I should be using.
And how close is too close? My set up does not allow for...

Re: Might get kinda cold 1st time greenhouse temp test

The other thing I'd be worried about is power loss events.

Re: cold protection for Queen Palms

If I had more $ I would simply do experimentation myself so I would know.

People quote certain temp values, but certainly the size of the palm & rootball, plus duration of the temp makes some...

Re: Banana pest?

10ft ladder, fun! There is always a shadow, or too much light even, and that is why I like the LED light. It just makes things pop. Which, by the way, the grubs tend to do when you squish them. Can...

Re: Might get kinda cold 1st time greenhouse temp test

Hmm, I'd worry about light scorch and how much heat do they actually give off?
Do you have room in the house to put the small plants?

Re: Banana pest?

I use a LED flashlight to look for pests (in the foliage) at dusk/night. The quality of the light I find great for making them stand out.

They may also be in the soil and since so large, you may be...

cold protection for Queen Palms

I have several potted Queen Palms. I usually bring them in the garage when it is near 25F or less and have done well this way. I've got some 20F nights forecast, and occasionally I get down to 17F....

Re: really rootbound

Ah, I'm glad I asked, I would have been messing with the roots. On most plants I am pretty careful with the roots but I thought naner roots were pretty expendable. Hopefully it is good to trim off...

really rootbound

Just picked up a mekong giant in a 1gal pot. First time I have ever had to cut a pot to remove & repot a plant!

This thing is pretty much solid roots. The ones that had grown out the bottom and were...

Re: My landlord is making me get rid of my bananas!

That does suck.
I guess it is good that your rent covers utilities, tho.
I would definitely ask her to reconsider, what do you have to lose? Definitely mention the guy upstairs. Oh, and BTW, you are...

Re: What is this White Crap?

I may be wrong here, but I don't think there are any negative concerns with guttation and I am not sure how closely it is related to soil moisture.
So I would be cautious letting them dry out. I...

Re: How are everyone's banana plants this winter??

whoa, I think you actually cannot do water cuttings with plumies.
try plumeria101.com for info.
But I agree, seed grown plant may take a bit to bloom. Sorry, that should have been my first answer!
I...

Re: What is this White Crap?

Ah that is a good point, it could be guttation, I suppose. In the one photo there is a fine powder all along the ripped edge which didn't fit with my insect assumption. The guttation would be more of...

Re: How are everyone's banana plants this winter??

Mine bloomed after I took cuttings, which I understand is (somewhat?) common.
